10 Best Weekend Trips From Denver (Direct Flights Only)
Denver International is one of the best weekend-trip launchpads in America. Here are 10 cities you can fly to direct, what to do once you land, and how long they're worth.
Published April 27, 2026
DEN's hub status makes Denver one of the best weekend-trip launchpads in the country. United and Frontier together fly direct to 200+ cities; Southwest covers the leisure routes. Here are the 10 cities we'd actually recommend for a Friday-Sunday or 4-day weekend โ what to do, where to eat, and how long the trip is actually worth.
All flights listed are non-stop year-round (a few are seasonal โ noted).
1. Portland, Maine
Flight time: 4h 30m on United
Best for: Lobster rolls, lighthouse drives, fall foliage
How long: 3 days
Old Port is a 10-block walking district full of seafood shacks and breweries. Drive 25 minutes to Cape Elizabeth for Portland Head Light at sunset โ one of the most photographed lighthouses in America. Day trip to Freeport (LL Bean flagship + outlet shopping) or down to Kennebunkport. Fall foliage peak is mid-October.

2. Burlington, Vermont
Flight time: 4h on United (seasonal โ summer/fall only)
Best for: Lake Champlain, fall leaves, college-town vibes
How long: 3 days
Compact downtown around Church Street Marketplace. Rent a bike for the Burlington Bike Path along the lake. Day trip to Stowe (45 min) for the Trapp Family Lodge or Ben & Jerry's factory tour. Fall is the obvious play but summer is underrated โ the lake is swimmable and the sailing is real.
3. Portland, Oregon
Flight time: 2h 45m on Alaska + United
Best for: Coffee, food carts, Powell's Books
How long: 2โ3 days
Portland is the lowest-effort food city in America. The food cart pods (especially the one on SW 10th) are a 90-minute meal in themselves. Add Powell's, the Pearl District breweries, and a morning at Multnomah Falls 30 minutes east. Two full days is enough; three if you want to drive Highway 101 down to Cannon Beach.

4. Charleston, South Carolina
Flight time: 3h 30m on United
Best for: Lowcountry food, historic walking, beaches
How long: 3โ4 days
Charleston is the most photogenic city in the South. Stay in the historic district (south of Calhoun). Eat at Husk, FIG, and Lewis Barbecue. Day trip to Sullivan's Island for the beach or Magnolia Plantation for the gardens. Avoid July/August (it's a swamp); November and March are perfect.
5. Savannah, Georgia
Flight time: 3h 30m on United (seasonal)
Best for: Spanish moss, ghost tours, slower South
How long: 3 days
Savannah is what Charleston was 20 years ago โ slightly less polished, slightly more haunted. Walk Forsyth Park, eat at The Grey or Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room, take a ghost tour at sunset. Drive 30 minutes to Tybee Island for the beach. Pair with Charleston for a full week if you can.
6. New Orleans, Louisiana
Flight time: 2h 30m on United + Southwest
Best for: Music, food, French Quarter
How long: 3 days
Stay in the French Quarter or Marigny. Eat: Cochon, Mosquito Supper Club, Domenica, a po' boy from Parkway Bakery. Music: Frenchmen Street most nights, Preservation Hall for traditional jazz, Tipitina's for big shows. Avoid Bourbon Street after 8 p.m. unless that's specifically what you're there for.
7. Minneapolis, Minnesota
Flight time: 2h on Sun Country + United + Delta
Best for: Lakes, Scandinavian food, summer weekends
How long: 2 days
Minneapolis is a sleeper. Bike the Chain of Lakes, eat at Owamni or Spoon and Stable, hit a Twins game at Target Field. Day trip to Stillwater on the St. Croix or Stout's Island Lodge in summer. Winter is hard mode โ go in July or September.
8. Nashville, Tennessee
Flight time: 2h 30m on Southwest + United
Best for: Hot chicken, honky-tonks, music history
How long: 3 days
Lower Broadway is the obvious play โ bar-hop the honky-tonks. The interesting Nashville is in East Nashville and 12 South: small live venues, neighborhood restaurants, hot chicken at Hattie B's or Prince's. Country Music Hall of Fame is genuinely good even if you're not a country fan.

9. Austin, Texas
Flight time: 2h on United + Southwest
Best for: BBQ, food trucks, live music
How long: 3 days

10. Boston, Massachusetts
Flight time: 4h on United + JetBlue
Best for: Walking history, seafood, day trips
How long: 3โ4 days
Boston is one of the only US cities you can experience entirely on foot. Walk the Freedom Trail, eat oysters at Neptune, get cannolis in the North End. Day trip to Salem (45 min north) or take the ferry to Provincetown for the day. If you have 4 days, pair it with Cape Cod or Newport.

How to actually book
Use Google Flights with "explore from Denver" โ it shows direct-only flights to a map of the country, sorted by price. Set the budget filter to filter out connecting flights. Search Tuesday-Tuesday for the best fares; weekend departures are a 30โ50% premium.
For the trip itself, build a plan in TownHop with your destination as the start city. The planner gives you a day-by-day itinerary and recommends what to actually do once you land. Or pick a trip template and edit it.
The under-rated thing about flying for weekend trips: you can do this 6 weekends a year for less than the cost of one international vacation, and you'll see more of America than most people see in a decade.
Pick one. Book the flight first.
