Why I Built TownHop (And Why It's Becoming Something Bigger Than I Expected)
I didn't start out trying to build a company.
I was just trying to solve a problem at home.
My wife and I love getting out โ weekend trips, date nights, random small towns โ but planning always turned into the same frustrating loop. You open Google, scroll through reviews, check Instagram, maybe TikTok, bounce between maps, lists, and articles... and somehow still don't feel confident about where you're going.
Everything felt fragmented. Nothing actually showed you what a place felt like.
So I started building something simple: a way to see places before you go, using real videos from real people, and organize them into an actual plan.
That idea became TownHop.
The Core Problem
Discovery today is broken in a few key ways:
- Reviews are text-heavy and outdated. A wall of text from 2023 doesn't tell you what a place feels like right now.
- Social content is entertaining, but not actionable. A TikTok of someone's dinner looks great โ but you can't do anything with it.
- Planning tools are rigid and don't reflect how people actually go out.
- There's no clean way to go from "that looks cool" to "here's my night or trip." You end up doing a ton of work just to make a decent plan.
What TownHop Does Differently
TownHop flips the model.
Instead of starting with lists, you start with short-form video discovery โ quick, real previews of places from people who have actually been there.
Then, instead of saving things randomly, you can:
- Build a full night out or trip with multiple stops
- See how stops flow together on a real route
- Let AI help optimize timing, routes, and ideas
- Follow plans created by other people โ like a perfect date night or weekend itinerary someone already tried
It's not just "find a place." It's plan the entire experience.
The Moment It Clicked
At some point, this stopped being just a tool for us.
When I saw how powerful it was to watch someone's full night out, copy that exact plan, or tweak it for your own situation โ it became obvious this was bigger.
People don't just want recommendations. They want proven experiences.
That's where creators come in.
Where It's Going
TownHop is evolving into something that sits between TikTok-style discovery, Google Maps utility, and AI-powered planning.
- Creators can build and share full experiences
- Users can follow, copy, and adapt them instantly
- Businesses can plug into those experiences with deals and events
It becomes a network of real-world plans that actually work.
Why I'm All In
I've worked in tech for a long time, including building large-scale systems at Amazon. But this is different.
This is something I actually use. Something my family uses. Something that solves a real, everyday problem.
And honestly โ it's taken over my life a bit. But in a good way.
