The Vibe
You’ve really got to experience the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bat Bridge, especially if you’re in Austin between March and October. Around dusk, the world’s largest urban bat colony, estimated at 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats, emerges from under the bridge, creating an unforgettable spectacle as they swirl into the sky to hunt insects. The best viewing spots are either from atop the bridge’s pedestrian walkways, on the grassy slopes of the Statesman Bat Observation Center on the south bank, or from a kayak or stand-up paddleboard on Lady Bird Lake below. Parking can be tricky downtown, so consider arriving early to find a spot or using a ride-share service. It's a fantastic, family-friendly event that draws a crowd, so expect company, but the sheer volume of bats ensures everyone gets a stunning view of this unique natural phenomenon.
