Government Canyon is truly a special spot if you’re looking to escape the city and immerse yourself in nature. It’s a massive natural area, not a typical park, so come prepared for some serious hiking or trail running. You’ll find over 40 miles of trails, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs that reward you with incredible views of the Hill Country. The highlight for many is seeing the dinosaur footprints, which are usually most visible after a good rain. Weekends, especially in cooler weather, can get quite busy, so arriving early is always a good idea to ensure parking and beat the crowds. It's perfect for a solo adventure, a family outing with older kids who enjoy exploring, or even a quiet date if you're both into the outdoors. Just remember to bring plenty of water, as there's not much available once you're on the trails.
